anchorage refers to the process by a specific meaning is assigned to an image or text helping to clarify the interpretation.
PROS and CONS - PROS - anchorage can help construct meaning and position the the audiences interpretation of an image towards preferred reading.
CONS - there are not really any negatives however for the audience it could be really misleading meaning that the audience can get a total different perspective on a photo because of anchorage.
Anchorage is when newspapers in particular use a usually candid photo (when the object/person isn't posing or know they are in the photo) of a celebrity and create their own meaning behind the photo by using the text underneath or next to or even on the photo itself. For example the anchorage text for the photo above could be "Top Student Gem Kabashi seen dead at Sir John Lawes School". Or alternatively it could portray a different meaning such as "The President Donald Trump seems unconscious on a table ... what happened" as you can see I have changed the use of having celebrity endorsement to try making the use of anchorage different. The Pros of using anchorage text benefits the popularity of a text however in quite a few instances, the text creates a negative opinion on the person shown in the picture or sometimes the picture/image has no correlation to the text used for the anchorage. With anchorage images, it does not ever really matter how good the photo is as the whole point of anchorage pictures are to be able to create a description below, usually slandering the subject or using the subject to comment on current affairs in the world. I think this image was a very good image to use for anchorage as they are many connotation of what can be seen which in effect opens everything up to the public. The anchorage text will influence how an audience might decode a message in a print publication, like a newspaper.
